Complete collection of first editions of the novels and stories of this much loved Queensland writer [1925-2004]. Astley won more Miles Franklin Awards, Australia's most prestigious literary prize, than any other author. Many of these were wittily inscribed by Astley to the younger writer Gerard Windsor. On meeting Windsor Astley said `you were at the Terrace with my brother Phil?' Windsor wasn't; Astley was mistaking him for his uncle and namesake who disappeared over the North Sea in 1942. But Windsor had been a Jesuit at Loyola College, Watsonia, with Astley's brother, Father Philip Astley, SJ

Breviarium Monasticum Pauli V. ac Urbani VIII. Summorum Pontificium auctoritate recognitum, pro omnibus sub regula SS.mi P. Benedicti militantibus, in quo sunt omni studio disposita Officia Sanctorum, ut nihil amplius desiderandum supersit. In quattuor Anni Tempora divisum. In 4 volumes
Venetiis, Ex Typographia Balleoniana, 1744 A Benedictine breviary, each of its four volumes being devoted to one season of the Church's liturgical year. Each volume in full maroon calf, richly stamped in gilt, in the ornate design known as `fan' design. The spines are raised in compartments, decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers; two of the volumes have two ornate brass clasps each, and two have one each. All the edges are gilt. Printed in red and black, with engraved plates. Both text and bindings in very good condition
The binding seems contemporary with publication. However there are a number of pages from a later date inserted into the text, e.g. a 24 page revision of 1863 for the Feast on 8 December of the Immaculate Conception. It seems likely/possible that the four volumes were disbound at that time and rebound in the same bindings with the revised texts inserted. One of the insertions is dated 1751, so that it seems likely that the first binding was not done till then. Also interleaved throughout the text are a number of small engraved sheets, containing images of saints and prayers (i.e. in modern parlance, 'holy cards'). The text on some of these is Portuguese and on one it is German. Hence the book was a working breviary and very likely used outside Italy, its country of origin.

[BRINDABELLA PRESS]

Collection of Alec Bolton's legendary Brindabella Press (known from 1985-1992 as Officina Brindabella)

The press began in 1973 with the issue of 150 copies of a single sheet of folded paper reproducing Rosemary Dobson's 'Three Poems on Water Springs', and ended in 1996 with Gavin Souter's memoir, `Leon Gellert'. Further publications were announced and underway but Alec Bolton's sudden and premature death in 1996 meant the end of this wonderful venture. The collection on offer includes all but two of the items numbered 1 - 27 in 'An Anecdotal Checklist' in Michael Richards's 1993 `A Licence to Print, Alec Bolton and the Brindabella Press'. Not included are Nos 18, a broadside, Judith Wright's `Rainforest', and 22, Barbara Hanrahan's suite of Twelve Linocuts. Also not included is the 1994 broadside, Les Murray's `The Sleepout'.The Checklist ends with Helen Ogilvie's Wood Engravings announced for 1994. This book was not in fact published until 1995 and was preceded by the Les Murray broadside, and J R Rowland's `Granite Country'. The offering includes copies of the great Brindabella rarities, Number 1 (the Rosemary Dobson), and Numbers 3 and 5, the Christmas cards with poems by Francis Webb and Douglas Stewart. Number 1 has the bookplate of the poet and bibliophile Jean Stone tipped onto the rear panel, Number 5 (Douglas Stewart's 'Brindabella') is a variant on the Richards entry, being signed by neither poet nor illustrator, but by the printer, A.T.Bolton. Number 3 (Francis Webb's 'Five Days Old') is signed by Webb. Richards quotes Bolton that of the 100 copies printed Webb signed about twelve shortly before his death. Number Ten, Manning Clark's eulogy for David Campbell, is perhaps just as rare. It was given away, not sold. This copy is signed by Clark (not called for by Richards) and further inscribed To Roger [McDonald] and Rhyll [McMaster] from Judy [Campbell - the poet's widow]. In addition to these thirty items, the collection includes other related Brindabella printings and flyers and ephemera. These include Nan McDonald's `For Prisoners, an Unpublished Poem', 77/150, signed 'ATB', 8 pages in ochre wrappers, `Hand set and printed by Alec Bolton for friends of Nan McDonald and of Brindabella Press', October 1995. There are four newsletters, `Publications from 1973 to 1989 of the Officina Brindabella with a note on the Beginnning of the Press', (October 1990), `Brindabella Press, The Name Regained and Other News', about 400 copies, (Sept 1992), News from Brindabella Press (1993), and 'News from Brindabella Press' (Sept 1996). In addition there are nine flyers for Brindabella publications and other ephemera related to the Press as well as a copy of Michael Richards's 'A Licence to Print'.The collection has some slight potential for upgrading. Number Twenty Four Hanrahan's `Iris in Her Garden'), is here offered in the edition of 220 copies in paper covers, (there were 30 in quarter leather). Number Two (David Campbell's Starting from Central Station) has an inscription on the limitation page (To Betty, With Love, Bill), and three items have some very slight foxing to the prelims, although not affecting the title pages. Otherwise the collection is never less than fine and generally mint

MAY, Phil

Grien on Rougemont or the story of a modern Robinson Crusoe. As told in the pages of the `Daily Chronicle'; Illustrated with 10 humorous full-page illus. by Phil May and other pictures. Also a pantomine sketch by Barry Pain
London, Edward Lloyd, 1898 pp34 (printed double columns), adverts; 4to. Bound, with the original Phil May colour wrappers, in quarter cloth, with board sides. A couple of tears where roughly handled, boards sl. sunned. Very good
Henri Louis Grin was Swiss born, and came to Australia in 1875 as butler to the new governor of Western Australia, Sir William Robinson. He sailed to Queensland in the pearling cutter `Ada' in 1877, where he claimed to be wrecked off the Lacrosse Islands. He made his way, via New Zealand, to London, where he published sensational (and fraudolent) accounts of his 30 year ordeal as a castaway among the aborigines of Northern Australia. Under the ficticious name of Louis de Rougemont, he has a prominent place among perpetrators of literary hoaxes and imaginary voyages. Phil May's time in Australia was relatively brief (1885-1888), but he produced over 800 drawings for The Bulletin. This copy is from the Edge Partington collection, with bookplate. Rare
